Part 34: Mark 9:30-37
Last of All, Servant of All: When Jesus Redefines Greatness (Mark 9:30–37)
In this message, we follow Jesus as He quietly pulls His disciples away from the crowds and walks them toward the cross—and toward a whole new definition of greatness. On the road, He repeatedly tells them about His coming betrayal, death, and resurrection, but they can’t hear it because they’re still clinging to their own story of crowns, thrones, and status. Instead of asking honest questions, they stay afraid and confused. Then, in a house in Capernaum, Jesus exposes the argument they hoped He didn’t hear: which of them is the greatest? His answer doesn’t shame their desire to be great… it completely redefines it. Sitting down as Rabbi, He calls them to be “last of all and servant of all,” then wraps a small, powerless child in His arms and says, “This is what greatness looks like in My kingdom.” If you’ve ever chased platform, struggled with pride, or wondered where Jesus is in the hidden, thankless places of your life, this sermon will help you see how true greatness is found in humble service and in embracing “the least” in His name.
